About Fiddler On the Roof
Fiddler on the Roof is based on the short story Tevye and His Daughters by Sholem Aleichem. Fiddler on the Roof is one of the first musicals to define Broadway’s established rules of commercial success. It dealt with serious issues such as persecution, poverty, and the struggles to hold onto one’s beliefs in the midst of a hostile and chaotic environment. Criticized at first for its limited appeal, Fiddler on the Roof struck such a universal chord in audiences that it became, for a time, the longest running production in the history of Broadway. It ran for 3,242 performances at the Imperial Theatre and opened the door for other musicals that deal with serious issues (such as Les Miserables).
Set in 1905 the story takes place in Anetevka, a small Jewish village in Russia. The story revolves around the dairyman Tevye and his attempts to preserve his family’s traditions in the face of a changing world. When his eldest daughter Tzeitel, begs him to let her marry a poor tailor rather than the middle-aged butcher that he has already chosen for her, Tevye must choose between his own daughter’s happiness and those beloved traditions that keep the outside world at bay. Meanwhile, there are other forces at work in Anetevka – dangerous forces that threaten to destroy the very life he is trying to preserve.
Cast includes: Tevye, a dairyman, Golde, his wife; his daughters: Tzeitel, Hodel, Chava, Shprintze, Bielke; Yente, the matchmaker; Motel, the tailor; Perchik, the student; Lazar Wolf, the butcher; Mordacha, the innkeeper; Rabbi Grandma Tzeitel; and other speaking roles as well as the fiddler and a large cast of villagers (chorus).
Thanks you! Please prepare for this audition according to instructions below. If you are interested in performing a solo or duet for any of our Musical Reviews please be prepared to perform the number in its entirety at your audition.
To Audition for Live Oak Theatre:
Prepare 16 bars of a ballad as well as an up tempo musical theatre song, please provide sheet music with chord symbols (an accompanist will be provided) or CD. Those auditioning for a role should be prepared to read from the script or do improv and dance (wear comfortable clothes and dance shoes).
Another friendly piece of auditioning advice… If you are hoping to be cast in a specific role DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Find a copy of the script and get to know the character and/or which character you would like to play. It never hurts to research the history of the time period and the culture of said character. Most importantly, if you are hoping to impress the Music Director its always a good idea to come in knowing the songs of the character you are auditioning for REALLY WELL- just in case! Break a leg everybody!
